Royal Swazi Sun Golf Course

golf300The Royal Swazi Sun is a spectacular 18-hole championship golf course, laid out at the foot of the Lemombo Range in the Ezulwini valley. All the way round the course the mountains tower over you making for some very dramatic scenery. The sweeping par 72 course, which was opened in 1966, is played off the men’s tees to a length of 6700 yards (6000 yards for women) The first nine holes are comparatively level, and the second nine fully exploits the mountainous terrain.

The whole of Royal Swazi Sun has a colonial feel to it with bright colourful shrubs lining the driveway and surrounding the clubhouse. The clubhouse offers a beautiful veranda overlooking the 18th green and is a perfect place to enjoy a drink and some food whilst discussing the golfing trials of the day.

swzi sun300Greens and fairways are in tip-top condition. All the greens have been planted with Durban Country Club grass, which provides a thinner and therefore faster putting surface, and all meet PGA standards. The fairways are planted with hardy Kikuyu, which remains relatively green throughout the year.

Challenging features include lakes, gullies thick with vegetation, clusters of magnificent trees, indigenous plants and some very well positioned bunkers, one of which is so steep that railway sleeper steps have been provided to facilitate access.

Royal Swazi Sun annually hosts a South African tour event and previous winners include Ernie Els, John Daly, Mark Mcnulty and for those with longer memories, Hugh Baiocchi back in 1976.
